Santa Tracker 2024: Follow His Journey with NORAD Now!
It’s Christmas Eve, and Santa Claus is ready for his yearly journey from the North Pole to deliver presents to homes worldwide. Santa Tracker is Continuing a cherished tradition, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is once again tracking Santa’s festive voyage. Using an official, consistently updated map, NORAD provides real-time updates on Santa’s location as he spreads holiday cheer before Christmas 2024.
NORAD, tasked with safeguarding the skies over the United States and Canada, has tracked Santa’s movements since 1958. Before NORAD, the Continental Air Defense Command managed the Santa-tracking tradition for three years.
Here’s everything you need to know about following Santa’s journey this Christmas.
Where is Santa right now?
NORAD’s live map offers real-time updates on Santa’s whereabouts during his global trip. Starting at the North Pole, Santa heads south along the Pacific Rim before moving through Asia, Australia, Africa, and Europe. His journey continues across Antarctica and, as night falls in the Western Hemisphere, he travels through South America and the Caribbean, eventually making his way north across the Atlantic to Greenland, Canada, and the U.S. Along the way, Santa has already delivered over 6 billion gifts.
You can monitor Santa’s progress on NORAD’s website or follow updates on the agency’s social media platforms, including Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and YouTube.

When will Santa arrive at your house?
While the NORAD tracker shows Santa’s position at various points in his route, it can’t predict when he’ll arrive at your home. NORAD explains that its tracking system follows Santa’s movements but cannot forecast his itinerary or next destination.
“Only Santa knows his exact route, so we can’t predict when he’ll reach your house,” NORAD states on its website. “However, history shows that he only visits when children are asleep!”
According to NORAD’s experts, Santa typically arrives at individual homes between 9 p.m. and midnight on Christmas Eve.
How does the Santa tracker work?
NORAD uses radar technology and satellites to track Santa’s journey. These advanced systems are also employed to monitor and protect North American airspace. The radar network, called the North American Warning System, includes 47 checkpoints spread across northern Canada and Alaska.
“Each holiday season, NORAD monitors its radar for signs of Santa’s departure from the North Pole,” the agency’s website explains. “Once our radar confirms Santa’s lift-off, we use satellites to track his progress, similar to how we detect missile launches aimed at North America.”
Families can also call the NORAD Tracks Santa Operations Center at 1-877-HI-NORAD (1-877-446-6723) to get live updates on Santa’s exact location. Lines are open from 6 a.m. to 2 a.m. Eastern Time on December 24, with NORAD operators ready to share Santa’s real-time position.
Over 1,250 volunteers, including uniformed personnel from the U.S. and Canada, answer phone calls and emails on Christmas Eve while the Santa tracker is active. Civilian volunteers from the U.S. Department of Defense often assist, and occasionally, the president and first lady join in to take calls.

What else should you know about the Santa tracker?
NORAD shares that Santa’s journey typically begins at the International Date Line in the Pacific Ocean and follows a westward path. Historically, Santa starts by visiting the South Pacific, then moves on to New Zealand, Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe, North America, Central America, and South America in sequence.
Santa’s route can be unpredictable due to weather conditions. NORAD works closely with Santa’s Elf Launch Staff to confirm his departure time but emphasizes that Santa makes all final decisions about his path.
